The results of the 5G pilot project developed in the Port of Aveiro by Vodafone and Ericsson, with the participation of the port operators Aveiport and PTM - Ibérica, were presented.
It should be recalled that this project aimed to assist in planning, monitoring and managing cargo, in real time, using Vodafone's 5G private mobile network, through digital replication solutions, as well as augmented/virtual reality applications and devices, aided by high-definition cameras, tablets and VR glasses, allowing efficiency gains at economic and environmental level.
Of the results analysed, we highlight the following, taking into account the baseline scenario versus the POC - proof of concept - scenario:
- 10% increase in the number of items unloaded per hour;
- Reduction, by 10%, in the time it takes to unload each ship;
- Reduction, by 8%, in the time taken to use the forklift;
- Reduction, by one third, in the time taken to record vessel freight data in the database;
- A 50% increase in the number of data uploaded into the base, with the possibility of adding new information - such as location, position orientation, stacking and freight status, to speed up operations.
It should be noted that the installation of a dedicated infrastructure will allow the Port of Aveiro and its logistic operators to enjoy a private 5G network, paving the way for new projects and a greater integration of various technologies and the development of new applications.
