Pilotage entering and departing from port is compulsory and is done with the presence of a pilot on board, although other means of communication and guidance may be used from the SBP (Shore-Based Pilotage) located in the pilots' tower and equipped with the necessary electronic means.

The Maritime Traffic Service of the Port of Lisbon is the service responsible for identifying and monitoring maritime traffic in the VTS Aveiro area of operation, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, from the building adjacent to the Radar Tower at the entrance to the Barra.
The VTS area of operation is delimited downstream by a circle with a radius of [insert number] nautical miles centered on the Aveiro Lighthouse. Upstream, the VTS area limit is defined at the main navigation channel in the small shipyards area at buoy no. 26, in the Mira channel by the Barra Bridge, and in the São Jacinto channel, 100 meters upstream of the Cais de Pedra.
It is mandatory to notify and report to the Port of Aveiro Control and to maintain continuous listening on the respective service channel on the maritime VHF band, in accordance with the current Maritime Mobile Service Communications Plan in the Port of Aveiro – VHF Channel 74 (Port VTS Main Channel).
