On 4 June, the Aveiro Port Authority signed a commitment to the 'Restore Our Oceans and Waters by 2030' mission charter at the Regional Coordination and Development Commission of the Centre in Coimbra, in the presence of the head of the European Commission's 'Restore Oceans, Seas and Waters' mission, Elisabetta Balzi.
"By signing this Mission Letter, the Port of Aveiro reaffirms its commitment to continue its energy transition process in order to decarbonise its operations, to continue contributing to the protection of the coastal ecosystem and its biodiversity, and to implement a plan for the sustainable management of green areas within its jurisdiction. It also undertakes to develop these projects, creating synergies with the port community and involving all partners, in accordance with the principles set out in the Mission Charter 'Restoring Our Oceans and Waters by 2030'," said Eduardo Feio, President of APA, S.A., at the signing ceremony.
This commitment, which includes ongoing projects at the Port of Aveiro to decarbonise, restore ecosystems and promote biodiversity, involves citizens and the entire port community and represents an investment of around 17.6 million euros.
The Port of Aveiro's contributions to this mission include the decarbonisation measures it is implementing in line with its Energy Transition Strategy, the dredging of the coastal zone and the promotion of biodiversity through the development of a management plan for the green zones within its jurisdiction, aimed at promoting native species and controlling invasive exotic species.
The mission aims to protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, prevent and eliminate pollution of our oceans, seas and waters, and make the blue economy sustainable, carbon neutral and circular.
The session 'Charting a Regional Course for the Mission to Restore Our Oceans and Waters by 2030: Fostering Sustainable Innovations in the Central Region, Portugal' was organised by the CCDRC, in collaboration with the University of Aveiro and the A-AAGORA project, in which the Port of Aveiro is a partner.
