The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Aveiro, Eduardo Feio, and the Chairman of the Port Authority of A Coruña (Spain), Martín Fernández Prado, yesterday (28 October) signed a Memorandum of Understanding that strengthens cooperation between the two entities with the aim of promoting a policy of ecological transition and sustainable industry, focusing on the development of renewable energies, particularly offshore wind energy.
The aim of the memorandum is to set out the guiding principles for joint actions to be developed to promote the exchange of knowledge and professional experience between the two institutions in the context of the decarbonisation of the economy and the energy transition. The focus will be on the development of offshore wind energy to benefit the entire value chain of the port logistics environment and related industries.
As key nodes in global logistics chains, ports can play an important role in decarbonisation by promoting the adaptation of infrastructure and the integration of clean energy into their activities. This Memorandum of Understanding recognises that port facilities have the potential to be catalysts for change, both in their direct operations and in the surrounding industries, promoting more efficient and sustainable port activities.
The cooperation between the ports of Aveiro and A Coruña also aims to generate economic synergies that will benefit the regional economies of the North and Centre of Portugal and Galicia, promoting the energy transition through joint actions that facilitate the exchange of technical information and the coordination of industrial and logistical projects that integrate low-carbon solutions.
The strategic importance of the Northern and Central Euro-region of Portugal and Galicia, with its high development potential, where consolidated social and economic interaction creates favourable conditions for the implementation of fair and well-structured environmental policies, facilitates the introduction of new renewable energies. This step is essential for the establishment of a sustainable industry and the preparation of the energy future of the respective territories.
In the long term, the partnership aims to consolidate a model of cooperation between port entities and their industrial environment, working together for continuous sustainable development based on the use of renewable energy sources. This collaboration also reflects the historical bonds of friendship and institutional exchange between the two ports, reinforcing their commitment to the environmental and economic future of the regions in which they operate.
