On 28th November, the Ports of Aveiro and Figueira da Foz attended the conference "Offshore Wind Energy, the Opportunities of the Blue Economy", held at the School of Technology and Management of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. The event, organised by the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo and the Repsol Foundation, brought together experts and representatives from the wind energy sector to discuss the opportunities of the blue economy and the role of wind energy in the energy transition process.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Aveiro, S.A. and the Port of Figueira da Foz, S.A., Eduardo Feio, participated in the round table "The Vision of the Atlantic Coastal Ports", where he shared the Port of Aveiro's perspective on the potential of the offshore wind sector, highlighting the strategic importance of Atlantic ports in supporting the development of this technology.
Offshore wind energy, based on the exploitation of offshore wind, is a key vector in Europe's energy transition. The strength and consistency of offshore wind, combined with its renewable and inexhaustible potential, make it an increasingly important energy source. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), installed offshore wind power could reach 350 GW by 2030, with the European Union forecasting 110 GW. This scenario places Portugal in a privileged position, with exceptional natural conditions for the development of floating wind farms, as well as a solid industrial and innovation capacity, which allows the country to stand out as a leader in the manufacture, export and technological development of offshore wind solutions.
In the context of this development, ports play a fundamental role in the logistics chains for the installation of offshore wind farms, as well as a central role in their maintenance and operation.
This event highlighted the privileged position of the Port of Aveiro and the Port of Figueira da Foz in this context.
