The Port of Aveiro is carrying out two strategic projects that reinforce its commitment to modernising and making more sustainable its maritime and road infrastructures. These initiatives include the redevelopment of Marginal Avenue at the High Sea Fishing Port (Dock Quay), as well as maintenance dredging at the High Sea Fishing Port and the Forte da Barra Channel. The aim is to increase environmental resilience, safety, efficiency, and navigability.

The requalification of Avenida Marginal

The contract to upgrade the Avenida Marginal of High Sea Fishing Port (Dique Quay) aims to enhance the value of this port infrastructure and increase its resilience to climate change. This will help to avoid flooding during periods of high tide. The contract, which is valued at approximately 4.5 million euros, will be carried out by Paviazeméis - Pavimentações de Azeméis, Lda and is expected to take 365 days to complete.

The works include the construction of a reinforced concrete wall with a crowning height of +5.0 (Z.H.) along the retaining wall, eliminating the need to raise the pavement and ensuring that access to all existing business units remains unchanged.

The intervention also includes significant improvements to the functionality and safety of the road. These include:

  • rehabilitation of the pavement;
  • creation of a shared cycle path;
  • reorganising and creating pavements and parking areas;
  • installation of new bollards.
  • reinforcement of marginal retention;
  • public lighting improvements;
  • implementation of a fire-fighting network.

This port infrastructure plays a crucial role in the ohigh sea fishing sector and serves 15 pier bridges used by companies involved in fishing, fish processing, freezing and distribution. Light and heavy vehicles, as well as equipment to support ships and industrial and fish storage facilities, use it on a daily basis. There is also capacity for the development of other port activities, particularly in the Ponte-Cais 12 building.

Maintenance dredging

The maintenance dredging contract, awarded to MMAS Dragagens S.A., represents an investment of approximately €425,000 and aims to ensure the navigability and safety of the fishing fleet and the Maritime Authority.

At the High Sea Fishing Port, work will begin in May, focusing on restoring the bottom levels near the quay bridges, which are currently silted up, making navigation difficult in certain tidal conditions.

Given the urgency of the situation in the Canalete, work will begin as soon as the necessary conditions are met. The aim is to normalise the operations of official vessels quickly and guarantee safe navigation in the area. The work is expected to be completed within 60 days.

Commitment to the future

These strategic investments, totalling around 5 million euros, demonstrate the Port of Aveiro's ongoing commitment to modernising and adapting its infrastructure to promote the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of port operations.

The intervention will enhance the High Sea Fishing Port's resilience to climate change, establishing it as a versatile and well-structured port infrastructure. The development of this project involved the fundamental participation of the Municipal Council of Ílhavo, the Parish Council of Gafanha da Nazaré, and the associations and companies located in the area of intervention.

The Port of Aveiro is thus strengthening the conditions of this infrastructure to support industrial and storage activities related to distant water fishing, as well as the development of new maritime and port activities. The work will also enable the Ponte-cais 12 terminal to be developed, and will create better conditions for strengthening the connection to the South Terminal of the Port of Aveiro,” says Eduardo Feio, Chairman of the Board of Directors of APA, S.A.
