The Port of Aveiro has started a strategic modernisation project with an investment of €1.74 billion and an estimated execution time of 365 days. The project is designed to strengthen the electricity supply and boost the sustainable development of the port's operations.

On 3 March, the public tender entitled 'Construction of the 60 kV SE Gafanha – SE APA Mixed Line' was published in the Diário da República. This project involves the construction of an underground and overhead high-voltage (60 kV) line between the Gafanha da Nazaré substation and the future Port of Aveiro substation. This work is considered essential for strengthening the port's electrical infrastructure and ensuring it has the capacity to meet growing energy demands.

This project is the first step in a series of initiatives aimed at significantly increasing the Port of Aveiro's capacity to supply and receive energy. Currently, the port's electrical infrastructure is limited, restricting the expansion of port activities. The new electricity connection will enable the supply of electricity to ships during their stay in port (On Shore Power Supply – OPS). This solution will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The new high-voltage connection will create the conditions necessary for implementing additional strategic projects, including the electrification of port operations, the progressive replacement of fossil energy sources and the attraction of new companies, thereby increasing the port's competitiveness.

The project forms part of the Energy Transition Strategy approved by the Port of Aveiro Administration in 2021 and aligns with the objectives of the European Green Deal and the Climate Law, which aim to reduce GHG emissions by 55 per cent by 2030. The Port of Aveiro is thus reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and to developing supply chains in the Atlantic Corridor of the TEN-T, thereby promoting a significant reduction in environmental impact.
