The Port of Aveiro has announced the launch of an international public tender for the construction of the Intermodal Terminal in its Logistics and Industrial Activities Zone. This strategic project is expected to require an investment of around 16 million euros.
With an area of 10 hectares, the terminal will feature two railway lines designed for trains up to 750 metres long, enhancing the Port of Aveiro's rail connectivity. The main objective of this infrastructure is to enhance the port's rail connectivity with northern and central Portugal, as well as strengthening links with Castilla y León and Madrid in Spain.
Expected to begin by the end of the year, this strategic project will provide the Port of Aveiro with greater operational efficiency, while encouraging more environmentally responsible transport solutions in line with national and European targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.
The Port of Aveiro will gain an important intermodal platform through this investment, enabling it to strengthen its position in global logistics chains, boost the competitiveness of industries in its area of influence, and consolidate its role as a leading multimodal freight transport infrastructure.
Funding for the construction of the Intermodal Terminal has been approved by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF2) under the dual-use funding line, totalling €7.6 million, which corresponds to an approved support rate of 47.3%.
