The redevelopment work on the Avenida Marginal do Porto de Pesca do Largo (Cais Dique), which began in April this year, was visited on June 6. Present at the visit were the Port of Aveiro Administration, the mayor of Ílhavo, João Campolargo, and the vice-president, João Semedo, the president of Port Community, Nuno Pires, and the Captain of the Port of Aveiro, Ricardo Guerreiro, as well as the contractor and technicians from APA SA, who monitored the progress of the intervention, considered strategic for the urban and functional enhancement of this port area.
The visit began at the new car park, which is nearly complete and will offer 138 parking spaces: 122 for light vehicles, 11 for heavy vehicles, and 5 reserved for persons with reduced mobility.
Although this first phase of the project is scheduled to last five months, the works along the seafront are already showing significant progress, with approximately 13% of the intervention completed.
During the visit, the first two maciços de amarração — reinforced concrete structural blocks that allow for the safe berthing of vessels — were observed. In total, 22 maciços will be installed during this initial phase, also serving as bases for the new cabeços de amarração, metallic structures used to secure the ships’ mooring lines. The existing cabeços will be removed and replaced with more robust ones, capable of withstanding 50 tonnes, thus reinforcing both the safety and the port’s capacity to receive larger vessels, positioning this infrastructure at the forefront within the Port of Aveiro.
Redevelopment aims to enhance port infrastructure
This port infrastructure plays a key role in the pesca do largo sector, currently serving 15 pontes-cais used by companies involved in the capture, processing, freezing, and distribution of fish.
The ongoing redevelopment also aims to increase the infrastructure’s resilience to climate change, helping to minimise the impact of flooding during high tide periods.
With a total investment of around 4.5 million euros, the project also includes the construction of a new retaining wall and various interventions in the public space: the creation of new infrastructure, construction of a bike lane, sidewalks, and landscaping works.
The project is scheduled for completion in April 2026.
