Last Wednesday, the Port of Aveiro inaugurated an open-air exhibition dedicated to the Forte da Barra. The exhibition - “Past, Present and Future” - is free to enter and will be on display until the end of August, next to the old Forte da Barra building. The exhibition can also be visited at night.
As part of the celebrations for the 217th anniversary of the opening of Barra de Aveiro, this exhibition portrays the history and importance of this iconic landmark, providing visitors with an experience of discovery about its role throughout the ages. With the aim of revealing the history, evolution and heritage value of the Forte da Barra, the exhibition includes various information panels, including the oldest known plan of the structure, dating from 1778.
There are also information panels on the recent projects for the Aveiro Port Administration Auditorium, as well as the hotel unit to be developed, by concession, in the buildings of the old fort complex.
Classified as a building of public interest in 1974, the Forte da Barra is today an essential part of the landscape and a symbol of the region's collective memory. The exhibition is the result of a partnership between the Port of Aveiro Administration - APA, S.A., CIEMar - Ílhavo Research and Entrepreneurship Center and ílhavo City Council.
