In line with the Sustainable Development Goals () and the European Union’s guidelines for climate transition, the Port of Aveiro is moving forward with a new collective self-consumption project for renewable energy. The initiative involves the installation of electricity production units from renewable sources in three locations: the North Terminal, the Coastal Fishing Port, and the Liquid Bulk Terminal. With the application already approved and an investment of around 500 thousand euros, the project is expected to begin later this year.
The initiative includes the installation of three Production Units for Self-Consumption (UPAC), with a total estimated energy production of 656,553.32 kWh/year, enabling the port to reach a self-consumption rate of over 80%. The implementation of the project is expected to result in a reduction of electricity consumption by 575,891.92 kWh/year, which environmentally translates into a greenhouse gas reduction equivalent to 49.52 toe/year of CO₂ emissions.
This project is part of the Energy Transition Strategy approved by the Port of Aveiro Administration, and is aligned with the goals of the European Green Deal and the SDGs, which call for a 55% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030. With this investment, the Port of Aveiro reinforces its position as a Green and Smart Port, promoting technological modernization and energy transition.
The project is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) through the Fundo Ambiental.
