The Port of Aveiro has resumed maintenance dredging works in the main navigation channel providing access to the port. This operation aims to ensure safe navigation conditions while reflecting the Port Administration’s commitment to sustainability and coastal protection. The dredged sediments are being deposited south of the 1st breakwater at Barra/Costa Nova, with the goal of reinforcing the dune ridge in that area. The intervention is being carried out in close collaboration with the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
The dredged sediments, with an estimated maximum volume of 135,000 cubic metres, will be used to strengthen the dune ridge through direct pumping via pipeline onto the emerged beach. While the sediments from regular maintenance dredging, usually discharged offshore near Costa Nova, also contribute to mitigating coastal erosion, this specific intervention stands out for having a more direct and immediate impact on the recovery and stabilization of the dune system.
The works, awarded to the company Rohde Nielsen A/S, are part of the port’s maintenance dredging plan, representing an investment of around, eand are expected to be completed within one month.
In parallel, dredging works are also underway at the Porto de Pesca do Largo and the Jardim Oudinot Marina, aimed at improving navigability and safety in these areas, used by offshore fishing companies and for recreational nautical activities.
Over the past few years, the Port of Aveiro has made a consistent contribution to reinforcing the dune ridge, with an average annual immersion of 500,000 cubic metres of sediments.
This effort has been carried out in close coordination with the Portuguese Environment Agency, as part of a joint environmental enhancement and coastal defence strategy. The cooperation between both entities has ensured that dredging operations in the Port of Aveiro contribute not only to navigational safety but also to the territory’s resilience in the face of coastal dynamics and current climate challenges.
