More than 20,000 tonnes of wheat arrived at the Port of Aveiro last week aboard the Federal Katsura, a 190-metre-long vessel. This was just one of many shipments received in recent months. Between January and September 2025 alone, the port handled 4.44 million tonnes of cargo, representing a 6% increase compared to the same period last year. This marks the best result recorded since 2022, confirming a continued growth trajectory driven mainly by bulk cargo operations.
Among the different types of cargo, solid bulk stood out as the main growth driver, with 1.87 million tonnes handled, a remarkable 17% increase compared to 2024. Liquid bulk and general cargo also maintained a positive trend.
The average cargo per vessel increased by 5%, reflecting greater operational efficiency and the growing use of larger ships.
Agri-food and metallurgical products remain among the main cargo segments, with particular emphasis on September, when approximately 237,000 tonnes were handled out of a total of 533,000 tonnes of goods passing through the port infrastructure. This performance further consolidates the Port of Aveiro as a strategic hub for the region’s economic development.
With these results, the Port of Aveiro reaffirms its resilience and adaptability in a challenging economic context, strengthening its role as a leading Atlantic gateway within the national port system.
