The Port of Aveiro completed, in December 2025, the implementation project of the Digital Gateways, a project that marks a decisive step in the modernization and digitalization of land access control to the North Terminal, solid bulk and liquid bulk terminals of the Port of Aveiro. It is included in the Ports 5+ Strategy and forms part of the measures aimed at increasing the digitalization of the Port of Aveiro’s activities.

The project involved the installation of advanced technologies for the recognition, validation and registration of people, vehicles and goods, enabling the full automation of entry and exit processes at the terminals. The new gatehouses are integrated with the Single Port Card (CUP) and the Single Logistics Window (JUL), ensuring more efficient and faster management of logistics flows.

With this modernization, procedures previously carried out manually are now automated, also allowing the monitoring of time spent within the port facilities. The new access control system promotes greater fluidity in logistics chains, strengthens infrastructure security and enables terminal access management based on the prior scheduling of port operations, contributing to the reduction of congestion, particularly at the beginning of vessel loading and unloading shifts.

In addition to strengthening operational efficiency, the implementation of the Digital Gateways will also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by optimizing heavy vehicle flows, promoting greater environmental and economic sustainability of the logistics chains that use the port.

In a context of growth in the port’s cargo throughput, as currently recorded, this project proves to be critical to strengthening the competitiveness and attractiveness of the Port of Aveiro within the transport system.

Finally, it should be noted that this investment amounted to €4.6 million and was financed by the Thematic Programme for Climate Action and Sustainability – Sustainable 2030, through the Cohesion Fund, with a co-financing rate of 85% of the eligible investment value.
