On 17th December, the Administração do Porto de Aveiro, S.A. (APA) and the University of Aveiro (UA) signed an institutional and co-financing agreement to establish the UA/CESAM Non-Academic Chair - Port of Aveiro. The objective is to deepen scientific knowledge on the interface between environmental sustainability and economic development related to the port sector, promoting collaboration between these institutions in a field of growing strategic importance for the region and the country.
The UA/CESAM - Port of Aveiro Chair will focus on hydrodynamic modelling and assessment of environmental and climate impacts associated with port operations, with a focus on the Ria de Aveiro, an ecosystem classified as a Special Protection Area (SPA). The contract, which provides for the hiring of a doctoral researcher on a permanent basis and the possibility of funding a doctoral fellowship in a non-academic environment, includes support of 180,000 euros over 6 years, 300,000 euros per year, from the Aveiro Port Authority.
The new chair is part of the FCT-Tenure competition, an instrument of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which aims to co-finance up to 1,000 permanent positions for doctoral researchers. This initiative strengthens recruitment in research institutions and promotes partnerships with non-academic organisations such as the APA.
This protocol strengthens the link between science and industry, promotes excellence in research and contributes to the development of innovative solutions that ensure a balance between economic development, environmental protection and adaptation to climate change.
