The Port of Aveiro once again served as a showcase for technological innovation with the second trial of the 6G-VERSUS project, which took place last Wednesday at APARA’s facilities in the Coastal Fishing Port. The initiative brought together partners and stakeholders to demonstrate, in a real-world setting, the potential of Beyond 5G and 6G technologies applied to the port environment.

Funded by the Horizon Europe programme, the project plans to carry out eight trials in Portugal between January 2026 and July 2027, each with distinct objectives and solutions. The tests are being conducted by a consortium comprising the Pedro Nunes Institute, the Telecommunications Institute, Onesource, JSIO, Altice Labs and the Port of Aveiro Authority.

This second trial focused on mitigating security risks in a port context, with a particular emphasis on the transport of hazardous materials (HAZMAT), demonstrating how 6G networks could enhance monitoring and incident response. In parallel, solutions were presented aimed at optimising the energy consumption of port infrastructure, notably through more efficient and integrated management of renewable energy sources.

During the session, participants had the opportunity to watch demonstrations of monitoring systems supported by 6G technology, as well as to explore opportunities for collaboration and industrial adoption of these emerging solutions.

Like the first pilot project, which focused on energy-efficient environmental monitoring in ports using artificial intelligence, this second initiative reinforces the role of the Port of Aveiro as a living laboratory for the development and validation of next-generation technologies, with a direct impact on the safety, sustainability and efficiency of port operations.
