The Aveiro Port Authority – APA, S.A. and the Beiras Music Association (AMB) have signed a memorandum of understanding with a view to creating an original musical work to mark the 220th anniversary of the opening of the Aveiro harbour channel, a date to be celebrated on 23 September 2028. The agreement sets out the main commitments between the two organisations for the design, production and performance of an original composition intended to convey the historical significance and impact of the opening of the harbour on the region.

The work will be composed by the Portuguese conductor and composer Nuno Côrte-Real, represented by the Portuguese Society of Authors. It is expected to last around 60 minutes, involving an orchestra of 55 musicians and a choir of between 40 and 60 singers, as well as two soloists and a narrator or actor.
The premiere is scheduled for 2028, as part of the official celebrations marking the opening of the channel, and will be performed by the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras.

APA, S.A. will also support the creative process by providing historical information and facilitating contact between the composer and the Port of Aveiro.

The planned investment amounts to €40,000, divided between €15,000 for the creation of the musical work and €25,000 for staging the premiere concert.

The initiative aims to affirm the region’s collective memory and maritime identity through music.
