As part of the celebrations for Navy Day 2026, the Barra Lighthouse will be open to the public from 20 to 24 May.

Visits take place daily between 2.00 pm and 5.00 pm, organised in groups lasting approximately 45 minutes. Each group will be accompanied by experienced lighthouse keepers, who will share technical and historical knowledge about this iconic structure.

Opened in 1893, the Barra Lighthouse is the tallest in Portugal, standing at 62 metres high, and stands as a landmark of 19th-century engineering and an indispensable symbol of the identity of the Aveiro region. Located on Barra Beach, it has played a fundamental role in ensuring safe navigation along the Portuguese coast for over a century.

Beyond its operational function, the lighthouse represents a historical and cultural heritage of great value, reflecting the deep connection between the local community and the sea.

This initiative offers a unique opportunity for the public to get a close-up look at one of the most iconic structures of the national maritime heritage.
