The Port of Aveiro recorded the best first half in its history in terms of cargo throughput, consolidating its growth trajectory and reinforcing its strategic role within Portugal's national port system.
Between January and June 2026, the Port of Aveiro handled 3,288,679 tonnes of cargo, representing a 15.37% increase compared to the same period in 2025 and setting a new all-time record for the first six months of the year.
This strong performance was driven by significant growth across several cargo segments. Liquid bulk fuels increased by 43.46% to 452,291 tonnes, chemical products reached 447,228 tonnes (+12.71%), and non-metallic minerals totalled 396,742 tonnes (+32.28%).
Imports continued to account for the largest share of the port's activity, representing around 81% of total cargo handled, while exports accounted for approximately 19%.
This performance was accompanied by increased maritime activity, with 543 vessel calls (+17.53%) and a rise in gross tonnage (GT) to 3,584,138 GT, an increase of 18.77% compared to the same period last year.
These results confirm the Port of Aveiro's position as a leading port infrastructure, demonstrating its ability to meet the needs of the economy and its customers.
Supported by operational efficiency, high-quality infrastructure and close cooperation with the port community, these results reflect the confidence of operators, shipping companies and customers, while reinforcing the Port's commitment to sustainable growth, contributing to the competitiveness of businesses and the development of the regional economy.
The performance achieved during the first half of the year provides confidence for the remainder of 2026, with expectations that this may become another historic year for the Port of Aveiro.
Alongside its operational achievements, the first half of the year was also marked by the completion of the handling of project cargo destined for Mira, consisting of two pipelines measuring 1,140 metres each, which have since been installed for the Flatlantic Seastainable Flatfish Village, one of Europe's largest flatfish (turbot and sole) production facilities. The period was also marked by the dismantling of the cranes previously sold, which had been out of service at the North Terminal. Both operations contributed to the reorganisation and optimisation of the terminal's operational areas.
Investment in infrastructure improvements also continues, with procurement procedures currently underway for the repair of drainage channels and floor gratings, as well as warehouse roofs, alongside other maintenance and refurbishment works. These initiatives reflect the Port of Aveiro Administration's ongoing commitment to safety, operational efficiency and the enhancement of its infrastructure, creating better conditions to serve its customers and meet future challenges.
